The Club was founded in 1968 by local men Sean Rooney, Michael Lynam and Terry Wheatley. In the early years we had one men’s and one ladies’ team with home games played on the sloping grass pitch of the old Holy Faith Convent. After several moves to pitches in Lusk, Balbriggan and Mourne View, we finally got our own ‘grit’ pitch at the Community Centre in Skerries in 1988 – ‘Home’ at last! The upgrade to the current All-Weather facility in 2005 meant that at long last Skerries Hockey Club could compete on level par with the other Leinster clubs.
Today, the club has three ladies teams playing in Divisions 3 and 8 of the Leinster League. Unfortunately, we lost our men’s team during the 2017/8 season as many of the old timers swapped their hockey sticks for golf sticks! The club is now actively trying to encourage young boys to take up the sport and are hopeful of fielding a young men’s team in the near future.
The All-Weather pitch on Sunday mornings is a hive of activity during the season when almost 130 youngsters from 1st to 6th Class train and play matches in all weathers. In addition, there is a girls Under 13s (1st Years) and Under 16s (3rd /4th Years) teams participating in Leinster Leagues throughout the winter. We are very grateful to all the volunteers who give their time each week to keep this vital section of the club running. Their support is invaluable to us.
The age profile of the club is very young and we rely heavily on the support of parents and young volunteers. However, we are so grateful to have the continued support and guidance of past (older!) members in helping us to continue to develop the game of hockey in Skerries.
Skerries Hockey Club currently have two ladies teams in Leinster Leagues Divisions 3 and 8.
Training takes place on Monday nights 8 – 9.30 pm and on Wednesday nights 7 – 8.30 pm at the All-Weather pitch under the guidance of coaches Jason and Melissa.
Matches take place on Saturdays on a Home and Away basis and fixtures are posted weekly on the website.
